What is Human Papillomavirus (HPV)?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common viral infection primarily spread through sexual contact. It includes different types of strains, some leading to warts and others to cancers such as cervical, anal, and throat cancer.

Travellers, particularly those engaging in risky sexual behaviours, face potential HPV exposure, as the virus is widespread globally. Practising safe sex and receiving the HPV vaccine are crucial preventive measures for travellers to mitigate infection risks and associated health complications

Symptoms of Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

HPV usually does not cause symptoms, so people carrying the virus may not realise that they have the disease. However, warts vary in appearance;

Genital warts are tiny cauliflower-like bumps mainly forming on the vulva, inside vagina, penis, scrotum and around the anus.

Flat warts are flat, slightly raised lesions forming on the face and neck.

Common warts are rough, raised bumps that form on hands, fingers and elbows. They may be more susceptible to injury.

Plantar warts are hard, grainy bumps that form on the plantar surface of the feet, mainly heels.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination dosage

Vaccination against HPV helps protect against the strains most likely to cause genital warts and cancers. It is recommended for both males and females, ideally before sexual activity begins, to maximise its effectiveness in preventing HPV-related diseases. As there are multiple strains of HPV, the vaccine provides protection even if you are already infected by some types of the virus.

The vaccine dosage varies according to age and how well the immune system works:

  • People under 25 usually have 1 dose
  • People between the ages of 25 and 45, usually have 2 doses given over a period of 6 months
  • People with a weakened immune system, usually have 3 doses given over a period of 12 months

Frequently asked questions

The HPV vaccine is typically not recommended for those over 26 due to considerations such as cost-effectiveness and fewer health benefits. As many people during this age range have already been exposed to HPV, this reduces potential vaccination benefits if administered.

Feel free to reach out to your GP or school nurse to determine if you qualify for the vaccine based on your age and situation and contact Batley Pharmacy now to schedule your appointment.

The effectiveness of HPV vaccine is greatly reduced when an infection is already present. The primary aim of the HPV vaccine is to prevent the infection before it occurs.

If you are already sexually active, the HPV vaccine still offers some benefits but its effectiveness is reduced as compared to receiving it before being exposed to HPV.

No, the HPV vaccine is not recommended during pregnancy. It is advised to wait until after pregnancy to receive the vaccine.

While HPV vaccines are highly effective against some types, they do not protect against all types of HPV.

There is currently no treatment for Human Papillomavirus (HPV), but in most people, the infection clears up on its own within 2 years.

HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI), and nearly all sexually active people have it at some point in their lives without experiencing symptoms.
