What is Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is a highly contagious infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, presenting as an itchy rash with fluid-filled blisters. It is generally mild in children but can cause severe complications in adults, making vaccination vital for preventing these risks.

Signs and symptoms of Chickenpox

Most common conditions include:

High fever

Body aches

Headache

General weakness

Loss of appetite

Excessive tiredness

Itchy rashes with blisters

It typically starts in a day or two as an itchy rash that usually appears on your face, chest, scalp and back spreading to the rest of your body. In severe cases, it appears in the mouth, eyes or genitals. The rash progresses from raised, itchy bumps (papules) to fluid-filled blisters (vesicles). These rashes eventually form open wounds that crust over into scabs.

Chickenpox vaccination dosage schedule

The chickenpox vaccine (varicella vaccine) is administered in two doses for children younger than 13 years:

  • First dose between 12-15 months
  • Second dose between 4-6 years

For people aged 13 or older and non-immune adults, two doses are recommended, spaced four to eight weeks apart. The vaccine significantly reduces the incidence and severity of the disease.

How does the Chickenpox vaccine work?

Chickenpox vaccine (varicella vaccine) is a live vaccine. It contains a weakened form of the virus and when introduced, it stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies. These antibodies then provide protection against the chickenpox virus.
