What is Rabies?

Rabies is a deadly viral disease that affects the nervous system. It is primarily transmitted through bite or scratch of infected animals. The virus can cause a fatal infection if not treated before symptoms start. Travellers, especially those visiting regions where rabies is prevalent and may have encounters with stray animals or wildlife, face an increased risk of contracting the disease.

Rabies Vaccination

The Rabies vaccine and Human Rabies Immune Globulin (HRIG) are a preventive measure to protect against rabies. The typical dosage routine involves a series of doses administered either before potential exposure to the virus or after a potential exposure to ensure effective protection.

Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is administered if you are travelling to an area at high risk of rabies and if your work involves direct contact with animals.

Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis is administered after rabies exposure. This should also include Human Rabies Immune Globulin (HRIG)

The Rabies vaccine is a series of injections that are administered intramuscularly in the upper arm at the following intervals: 0,3,7 and 21 days with 0 being the day of the first vaccine.

HRIG is a shot that is administered near the site of an animal bite as soon as possible after the exposure. It is mainly given to individuals who have not been previously immunised.
